Healing Our Minds: Why Minority Mental Health Matters in Our Community

If you watched Straw on Netflix—you already know. That movie right there! It was a real life struggle for so many of us. Janiyah’s story felt like watching your own reflection. Mama doing the best she can. Pushing through every no, every shut door, every “you’re strong, you got this” when deep down, she’s barely holding it together.

Some of us are just holding on by our ‘last straw‘, doing everything we can to keep it together. But sis, you don’t have to do it alone.

She was every Black woman who’s ever had to smile through the pain. Every one of us who said “I’m fine” when we were anything but. All those times we put our needs last, carried the weight of the world, and still showed up anyway.

That’s why this month, we’re talking about it. Loud and clear.

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, and here at My Style Matters, we’re holding space for the conversations many of us were raised to avoid. Because being strong all the time? That’s not sustainable. And it shouldn’t have to be.

Mental health is health. Your peace of mind ain’t a luxury. It’s a need. And sis, you deserve to feel whole. Not just surviving, but truly healing.

Why It Matters

Mental health challenges don’t discriminate, but access to care does.

Here’s the truth Black women face:

  • We’re more likely to experience trauma (historical, personal, and generational).
  • Only 1 in 3 Black adults who need mental health care actually receive it.
  • Less than 5% of U.S. therapists are Black, meaning culturally safe spaces can be hard to find.

All of this leads to unspoken pain. And unspoken pain becomes disease, disconnection, and despair.

But we’re flipping that script. Because healing is our birthright. And when we feel seen and supported, we don’t just survive, we thrive. As an individual. As a community.

Tips for Taking Care of Your Mental Health

Let’s walk it out together. Here are some practical, soul-honoring ways to care for your mental health this month:

1. Give Yourself Permission to Pause. Rest is not lazy. Rest is resistance. Sis, take the nap. Cancel what drains you. Choose you.

2. Move Your Body, Move Your Mood. Stretch, dance, walk. It doesn’t have to be intense. Just move with joy and intention.

3. Nourish Yourself From Within. Hydrate. Eat whole foods. And don’t forget your soul food (we mean joy, music, culture, connection!).

4. Talk to Someone You Trust. That could be a therapist, a sister-friend, your faith leader, or a healing circle like ours.

5. Say No Without Guilt. Protect your peace. Set boundaries. Say yes only when it feeds your wellness.

What Healing Looks Like

Healing might look like:

  • Logging off social media to protect your peace
  • Going to therapy for the first time
  • Journaling through your feelings
  • Crying without apology
  • Choosing joy after trauma

Whatever your path looks like, it’s valid. And it’s sacred.

When the Journey Includes Cancer

Now let’s talk about something really important for a minute.

A cancer diagnosis doesn’t just affect your body; it impacts your entire being.

That’s why we created H.E.R.: Healing, Empowerment & Resilience, a Trauma-Informed Cancer Survivorship (TICS) Course designed for Black and Latina women.

Because yes, surviving cancer is heroic. But healing from cancer? That’s a whole other journey.

H.E.R. : Healing, Empowerment & Resilience is about unlearning shame, processing the emotional toll of treatment, and reclaiming your life with confidence and clarity.

Inside the course, you’ll:

  • Learn to name and navigate trauma.
  • Connect with women who truly get it.
  • Receive tools to advocate for your care.
  • Be reminded, week after week, that you are more than your diagnosis.

You are whole. You are sacred. You are still becoming.

Our ancestors endured so much that we could heal freely. Let’s honor them by choosing wholeness. You don’t have to carry it all, all the time. You are allowed to break, to rebuild, and to bloom again.

Sis, your mental health is not a luxury; it’s a lifeline. You’ve given your energy to everyone else. Now it’s time to pour back into you. This month, let’s rewrite the story. From silent suffering to bold healing. From trauma to triumph. From “I’m fine” to “I need support.” And remember: you don’t have to do it alone.
