Wellness Is Our HERitage: Celebrating National Wellness Month and Black Giving Month with Purpose

August is both National Wellness Month and Black Giving Month, a time to care for ourselves, give back, and celebrate the power of our community.
At My Style Matters (MSM), we believe wellness isn’t a luxury; it’s our HERitage. Every Black girl and woman deserves to live healthy in body, mind, and spirit. That’s why we focus on breast cancer prevention, raising awareness about health disparities, and equipping our community with the knowledge to make safeHER life choices—avoiding toxic chemicals and embracing resources that help us live well and thrive.
Wellness, One Step at a Time
Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean being perfect. It’s about making small, consistent choices that add up to big changes over time. That’s also the heart of the Let’s Beat Breast Cancer campaign, which highlights four healthy habits proven to reduce your risk:

Fuel your body with fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. A colorful plate is a powerful tool for health.

Find a type of exercise you enjoy. It can be walking, dancing, yoga, or biking. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day to keep your body strong.

Choose water, sparkling water, or fun mocktails instead. Cutting back on alcohol supports both your wellness and cancer prevention.

Balance what you eat with how much you move. Staying at a healthy weight helps your body fight off illness and stay energized.

Giving Is Wellness Too
August is also Black Giving Month, a time to celebrate the power of generosity in Black communities. Giving isn’t only about money; it’s also about time, love, and support. But when you donate consistently, your impact grows in ways that last.
Think about it: what if, instead of buying one drink this week, you used that money to give back? Skipping just one latte or frappuccino could help a breast cancer patient pay for treatment, provide a safer care kit, or bring health education to a neighborhood that needs it most.
That one small sacrifice means something far greater for someone else’s health and healing.
By becoming a monthly donor to My Style Matters, you help us:
- Provide financial support to breast cancer patients
- Distribute safer, nontoxic care kits
- Deliver life-saving health education to underserved communities
And as a thank-you, monthly donors receive a special gift, a reminder that you’re tied to a cause that truly changes lives.
